The Department of Health (DOH) has warned the public on Wednesday that 'Dexamethasone', a type of steroid, has not yet been confirmed for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the agency said.
This is followed by several published reports that these steroids have contributed significantly to the recovery as high as 30% among COVID-19 patients, based on information gathered by researchers from Great Britain.
“People might think that this is the magic pill for COVID-19. It is not. It is not a drug that you take, you lose COVID-19 or 'you take it, you cannot take COVID,' Department of Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in an online media forum on Wednesday, June 17.
According to officials, the 'Dexamethasone' is only used as a 'supportive treatment' for patients infected with the virus, especially those who are in critical conditions.
It also needs to undergo a peer review in order to prove that the evidence or study is acceptable.
"Let's wait for the results of this peer review so that our experts can study it and tell us what really can be done," Usec added. Vergeire.
It has been found that 'Dexamethasone' is a cheap steroid and is readily available at pharmacies
