31 NEW COVID-19 CASES, 53 RECOVERIES AND 1 DEATH RECORDED ON FRIDAY

 

As of 8PM on Friday, October 2, 2020, the Department of Health- Eastern Visayas reports the region’s total number of COVID-19 cases at 4,826, total recoveries at 4,138 (85.74%), and total deaths at 46 (0.95%). This brings the total active cases to 642 (13.30%).

A total of 31 new cases were recorded out of 902 laboratory samples tested in two (2) COVID-19 laboratories in the region, the EVRCTC and DWHVL.

The EVRCTC has released a total of  631 laboratory results. Of these, 607 are negative and 24 are positive for COVID-19 (with 23 new cases and 1 reswab).

Meanwhile, the DWHVL has released a total of 271 laboratory results. Of these, 262 are negative and 9 are positive for COVID-19 (with 8 new cases and 1 reswab).

The  31 new cases are  from the following provinces/cities/municipalities:

As of 4PM today, October 2, 2020, the Department of Health reports the total number of COVID-19 cases at 316,678, after 2,611 newly-confirmed cases were added to the list of COVID-19 patients.

DOH likewise announces 416 recoveries. This brings the total number of recoveries to 254,617.

Note: Of the 2,611 reported cases today, 2,150 (82%) occurred within the recent 14 days (September 19 - October 2, 2020). The top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were NCR (870 or 40%), Region 4A (400 or 19%) and Region 6 (255 or 12%).

Of the 56 deaths, 43 occurred in September (77%), 6 in August (11%) 5 in July (9%) 1 in May (2%) and 1 in April (2%). Deaths were from NCR (22 or 39%), Region 7 (7 or 12%), Region 4A (7 or 12%), Region 3 (6 or 11%), Region 5 (4 or 7%), Region 2 (2 or 4%), Region 6 (2 or 4%), Region 10 (2 or 4%), Region 9 (1 or 2%), Region 11 (1 or 2%), Region 12 (1 or 2%), and CARAGA (1 or 2%).

11 duplicates were removed from the total case count. Of these, 9 recovered cases and a death have been removed.

Moreover, 13 cases previously tagged as recovered were reclassified to deaths after final validation.

In addition, there's a death found to be negative and was removed from the total case count after final validation.

7 labs were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Data Repository System (CDRS) on October 1, 2020.

These numbers undergo constant cleaning and validation.

A COVID-19 Nasal Swab Test Punctured A Woman's Brain Lining And Leaked Beain Fluid From The Nose

A Covid-19 nasal swab test punctured a US woman's brain lining, causing fluid to leak from her nose and putting her at risk of life-threatening infection, doctors reported in a medical journal Thursday.

The patient, who is in her 40s, had an undiagnosed rare condition and the test she received may have been carried out improperly, a sequence of improbable events that means the risk from nasal tests remains very low.

But her case showed health care professionals should take care to follow testing protocols closely, Jarrett Walsh, senior author of the paper that appeared in JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery, told AFP.

People who've had extensive sinus or skull base surgery should consider requesting oral testing if available, he added.

"It underscores the necessity of adequate training of those performing the test and the need for vigilance after the test has been performed," added ear, nose and throat specialist Dennis Kraus of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, who wasn't involved in the paper.

Walsh, who practices at the University of Iowa Hospital, said the woman had gone for a nasal test ahead of an elective hernia surgery, and afterward noticed clear fluid coming out of one side of her nose.

She subsequently developed headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, and aversion to light, and was transferred to Walsh's care.

"She had been swabbed previously for another procedure, same side, no problems at all. She feels like maybe the second swab was not using the best technique, and that the entry was a little bit high," he said.

In fact, the woman had been treated years earlier for intracranial hypertension -- meaning that the pressure from cerebrospinal fluid that protects and nourishes the brain was too high.

Doctors at the time used a shunt to drain some of the fluid and the condition resolved.

But it caused her to develop what's called an encephalocele, or a defect at the base of the skull which made the brain's lining protrude into the nose where it was susceptible to rupture.

This went unnoticed until old scans were reviewed by her new doctors, who carried out surgery to repair the defect in July.

She has since fully recovered.

Walsh said he believes the symptoms she developed were a result of irritation to the lining of the brain.

If the problem hadn't been treated, she could have developed a potentially life-threatening brain infection from bacteria that traveled up the nose.

Or, air could have entered the skull and placed excess pressure on the brain.

Most testing protocols call for clinicians to follow the path of the floor of the nose, which lies above the roof of the mouth, rather than pointing the swab up -- or if they point it up, to do so with great care.

Walsh said that though this was likely a very rare occurrence, it was a reminder of the need for high-quality training, given that hundreds of millions more tests will be performed before the pandemic is over.

DOH cites improved health system capacity, pandemic response

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines’ health system capacity is improving despite ranking 20th in the world with the most number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases, the Department of Health said Friday. 

DOH Undersecretary and spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire added that the Johns Hopkins University’s virus tracker only showed COVID-19 cumulative cases and that the public should also focus on the active cases and number of recoveries. 

“Di lang numero ang lagi nating tinitignan kapag tinitignan natin kung how we are faring in this response,” Vergeire told reporters in an online press briefing. 

(We shouldn’t focus only on the numbers on how we are faring in this response.) 

“We might be in the top 20 among all of the countries in the world in the number of cases, but when we look at our health system capacity, it has been improved tremendously,” she added. 

Vergeire previously said that there has been an “improvement” in the country’s critical care utilization as there has been a “slow decongestion in hospitals including Metro Manila, the epicenter of 

the country’s COVID-19 outbreak. 

“Itong health system capacity, napaka-importante na tinitignan aside from the numbers,” she said. 

(This health system capacity is important aside from looking at the numbers.) 

The Numbers

With 314,079 total COVID-19 cases, the Philippines is now the 20th nation with the most number of infections.

The United States tops the list with 7,273,943 COVID – 19 cases, based on the Johns Hopkins University’s tracker.  

 ‘Contact tracing levels up’

Vergeire added that there has also been an improvement in contact tracing efforts and that the country’s testing capacity has expanded. 

“Sa ngayon (For now), we have already tested about 3.5 million [people],” Vergeire said of the number of people who have been tested. 

NCR cases decline

Aside from this, Vergeire also noted that there was a downward trend in COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila since it was placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) from Aug. 4-18. 

“From 16,000 weekly cases last Aug. 6 to 12, bumaba na po tayo sa 3,772 weekly cases nitong nakaraang linggo (we have gone down to 3,772 weekly cases in this past week) as of Sept. 28,” she said. 

“So if we look at that, talagang malaki na po ang nai-improve ng ating response compared to before,” Vergeire added. 

(So if we look at the number, there has been an improvement in the virus response compared to before.)

“So whatever would be this ranking across the globe, this is because of the totality of the number of cases,” she said.

“But when we look at the number of active cases, our recovery rate, our case fatality rate, and looking at our health system capacity, we can see that we have improved and sa tingin natin nakaka-agapay tayo dito sa ating (we think that we have improved in our) response for COVID-19.”

80 NEW COVID-19 CASES, 55 RECOVERIES AND 3 DEATHS RECORDED ON THURSDAY

As of 8PM on Thursday, October 1, 2020, the Department of Health- Eastern Visayas reports the region’s total number of COVID-19 cases at 4,795, total recoveries at  4,085 (85.19%), and total deaths at 45 (0.94%). This brings the total active cases to 665 (13.87%).

A total of 80 new cases were recorded out of 943 laboratory samples tested in two (2) COVID-19 laboratories in the region, the EVRCTC and DWHVL.

The EVRCTC has released a total of  617 laboratory results. Of these, 573 are negative and 44 are positive for COVID-19 (with 41 new cases and 3 reswabs).

Meanwhile, the DWHVL has released a total of 326 laboratory results. Of these, 286 are negative and 40 are positive for COVID-19 (with 39 new cases and 1 reswab)

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday said it needs about P300 million to boost its anti-cybercrime division as incidents of online fraud increased during the global pandemic, when a lot of people work, study and transact online to avoid contracting COVID-19 outdoors.

While authorities have arrested some 252 individuals who either stole identities or committed fraud online, the PNP's "cyberpatrol" efforts need to be improved, PNP chief Gen. Camilo Cascolan said during a budget hearing in the Senate.

"We requested funds for the cybercrime development and capabilities in the amount of P300 million," Cascolan told senators.

"To be frank with you, we are even being hacked by a lot of hackers," he said.

Cascolan did not give details about the hacking incidents, but said that there remains to be a "lot of scammer and predators in the online world."

The number of phishing and donation scams rose in April, a month after Luzon was placed on lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19, the National Bureau of Investigations (NBI) earlier said, without giving exact figures.

The number of reported online sexual exploitation of children in the Philippines increased by at least 260 percent during the coronavirus lockdown, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla, who raised the cybercrime issue during budget deliberations in the Senate, said the chamber will try to augment to PNP's budget for its online patrol units.

"This goes beyond cyber bullying. Online selling scam ang pinakanagaganap ngayon," Revilla said.

"We need to strengthen the capacity of the PNP by augmenting the budget to counter cybercrime," he said.

The PNP is batting for a P190.51-billion budget in 2021, 2 percent higher than its current P187.32-billion funding.

Note: Of the 2,415 reported cases today, 2,010 (83%) occurred within the recent 14 days (September 18 - October 1, 2020). The top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were NCR (727 or 36%), Region 4A (450 or 22%) and Region 3 (162 or 8%).

Of the 59 deaths, 37 occurred in September (63%), 10 in August (17%) 9 in July (15%) 1 in June (2%) and 2 in April (3%). Deaths were from NCR (26 or 44%), Region 7 (7 or 12%), Region 6 (6 or 10%), Region 1 (5 or 8%), Region 9 (4 or 7%), Region 10 (3 or 5%), Region 4A (3 or 5%), Region 5 (2 or 3%), CARAGA (2 or 3%), and Region 3 (1 or 2%).
